Everett Shilman's Transformer

The Tommyknockers

Everett Hillman’s transformer is a makeshift, cycling device whose intensified activity draws Jim Gardener back into the shed. Its growing power and its proximity to the still-conscious Hillman make it central to Gardener’s desperate effort to save David.

Appearance and Operation

The transformer is described as a large piece of cobbled-together equipment. When Gardener returns, it is glowing more strongly than on his previous visit, and its cycles have accelerated. Green light fills the shed, while thin green fire runs across the circuit boards, making the device’s activity visible rather than merely implied.

Hillman and the Device

The transformer stands beside Everett Hillman, who is floating in a green bath and looking back at Gardener with his one good eye. Gardener reads Hillman’s gaze as tortured but sane. The machine’s intensified operation and Hillman’s condition are presented together, although the scene does not explain how the transformer works or establish the precise connection between them.

Role in Gardener’s Urgency

Gardener enters the shed saying that others are coming for him and that he is out of time. The accompanying direction identifies the transformer as a means to save David, linking the device to an urgent rescue objective. Its faster cycles therefore coincide with a narrowing window for action: the transformer is not simply equipment in the room but part of the problem Gardener must act upon to reach David.
